vouch
🇺🇸 /vˈaʊtʃ/
🇬🇧 /ˈvaʊt͡ʃ/

archaic obsolete

verb
-
💡 常用结构是 vouch for someone 或 vouch someone as a witness,但前者在现代英语中更常见。 transitiveShe vouched for her colleague's account of what happened.
💡 常用结构是 vouch an authority or source in support of a claim,或 vouch for a claim by citing a source。 transitiveThe report vouches several independent studies in support of its conclusion.
💡 常用结构是 vouch for + 名词或从句,也可说 vouch for the truth of + 名词。 transitiveI can vouch for the accuracy of these figures. He vouched that the information came directly from the source.
💡 常见结构是 results or experience vouch for someone or something。 transitiveHer long record of careful work vouches for her reliability.
💡 常用结构是 evidence or facts vouch for + 人或事,也可以说 something is vouched with evidence,但后一种结构较少见。 transitiveThe results vouch for the effectiveness of the new method. His actions vouched for his good intentions.
archaic transitive
-
archaic obsolete transitive
-
transitive
-
transitive
-
obsolete transitive
-
💡 最常见结构是 vouch for + 人或事,否定式 can’t vouch for 也很常用,表示“不能保证”。 intransitiveI can't vouch for every detail, but the main story is true. Can you vouch for him if he applies for the job?

The verb is derived from Middle English vouchen (“to call, summon; to provide; to make available, proffer; to affirm, declare formally”) [and other forms], from Anglo-Norman vocher, voucher, woucher, and Old French vocher, voucher, vochier (“to call, summon; to claim; to call upon, invoke; to denounce”) [and other forms], from Vulgar Latin *vocicāre, derived from Latin vocāre (“to call, summon; to call upon, invoke; to designate, name; to bring or put (into a condition or state”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *wekʷ- (“to sound out; to speak”).
Verb sense 8.1 (“to summon (someone) into court to establish a warranty of title to land”) in the form vouch to warrant or vouch to warranty is a calque from Anglo-Norman and Old French voucher a garant.
The noun is derived from the verb.
