volleyball
★
🇺🇸 /vˈɑlibˌɔl/
noun
-
💡 常用 play volleyball、play beach volleyball 和 a volleyball game 等搭配。表示这项运动时通常不加冠词,也不说 play a volleyball;若指一场比赛,可以说 a volleyball match 或 a volleyball game。uncountableMy sister plays volleyball at school. We watched a volleyball match last night.
countableThe volleyball landed outside the court.

English volleyball
From volley + ball.
In 1895, in Holyoke, Massachusetts, William G. Morgan created a new game called Mintonette, a name derived from the game of badminton. After an observer, Alfred Halstead, noticed the volleying nature of the game at its first exhibition match in 1896, played at the International YMCA Training School (now called Springfield College), the game quickly became known as volleyball (it was originally spelled as two words: "volley ball")
