valence
🇺🇸 /vˈeɪlʌns/
🇬🇧 /ˈvæl(ə)ns/

💡 常见模式是“the valence of + 元素或原子团”以及“a valence of + 数值”。它既可以指抽象性质,也可以指某个具体数值;不要把它和只表示电荷的“氧化数”混为一谈。该词主要用于化学教材、论文和技术说明。countable uncountableThe valence of oxygen is usually two.氧的化合价通常是二。This atom has a valence of three.这个原子的化合价是三。
-
common 分子的结合位点数📖 在分子生物学或免疫学中,valence 指一个分子拥有多少个可以与其他分子结合的位置。例如,抗体可能有不止一个这样的结合点;这里强调的是可用的“连接接口”数量。💡 常见模式是“the valence of + 分子”或“a molecule with a valence of + 数值”。这个义项通常和抗体、抗原、结合位点等专业语境一起出现。不要把这里的 valence 误解为某个原子的化合价。countable uncountableThe antibody has a valence of two and can bind two identical targets.这种抗体有两个结合位点,可以结合两个相同的目标分子。
-
core 动词的论元数📖 在语言学中,valence 指一个动词能够带多少个论元,包括主语;这些论元可以看作动词需要连接的句子成分。例如,不及物动词通常连接一个主语,而及物动词还需要连接一个宾语。💡 常见模式是“the valence of + 动词”或“a verb with + 数值 + valence”。这里的论元不等于所有出现在句子里的成分,时间、地点等自由修饰语通常不算动词的必需论元。学习时不要把 valence 直接等同于“动词后面有几个词”。countableThe valence of the verb “give” is three because it takes a giver, a thing given, and a recipient.动词“give”的论元数是三个,因为它需要施予者、所给予的东西和接受者。In this sentence, the verb has a valence of two.在这个句子里,这个动词有两个论元。
-
common 情感效价;正负情感倾向📖 在心理学中,valence 指一个对象、情境或状态在情感上让人感到吸引还是排斥。正 valence 表示带来愉快、吸引等感受,负 valence 表示带来不快、排斥等感受,因此它像是“情感上的连接力方向”。💡 常见模式是“positive/negative valence”以及“have a positive/negative valence”。它描述的是情感方向或倾向,不是情绪强度;强烈的情绪可以有正效价,也可以有负效价。该用法多见于心理学和神经科学文章。especially uncountableFear and anger usually have negative valence.恐惧和愤怒通常具有负面情感效价。
-
common 对事物赋予的价值📖 这个义项表示一个人认为某个事物、情境或状态有多大价值,重点是个人赋予它的意义或评价。它比心理学中的正负效价更宽,可以不只涉及当下的愉快或排斥感。💡 常见模式是“place valence on + 对象”或“the valence assigned to + 对象”。它多用于社会科学、心理学和学术写作,通常不能像普通的“value”那样随意用于商品价格。需要表达明确的正面或负面情感时,优先理解为前一个心理学义项。uncountablePeople may place different valence on the same tradition.人们可能会赋予同一种传统不同的价值。

🌳 词源
普通名词义来自德语 Valenz,词源可追溯到拉丁语中表示力量、强健的词;语言学义仿照化学义形成。作为地名时,valence 借自法语 Valence,与 Valencia 是同源异形词。
Etymology 1, noun sense 1.1 (“combining capacity of an atom”) and etymology 1, noun sense 3 (“one-dimensional value assigned by a person to an object, situation, or state”) are borrowed from German Valenz + English -ence (suffix meaning ‘having the condition or state of’). Valenz is a clipping of Quantivalenz (“(archaic) valence in chemistry”), from English quantivalence, from Latin quantus (“how much”) + English -i- (interfix inserted between morphemes of Latin origin for ease of pronunciation) + Latin valentia (“bodily strength; health; vigour”) (whence Late Middle English valence (“medicinal preparation made from plants”); ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₂welh₁- (“to rule; powerful, strong”)). Quantivalence was coined by F. O. Ward who communicated it to the German chemist August Wilhelm von Hofmann (1818–1892), leading him to coin the German word Quantivalenz. Doublet of value.
Etymology 1, noun sense 2 (“number of arguments a verb can have”) was formed by analogy to the use of the word in chemistry: see above.
