outrage
★★
🇺🇸 /ˈaʊtɹˌeɪdʒ/
noun
-
core 暴行;残酷袭击📖 指严重、残暴而越过正常界限的攻击或暴行,重点在行为本身的恶劣程度。💡 常用模式是“an outrage against + 人或群体”或“a violent outrage”,也可以直接说“the outrage”。它既能指一次具体暴行,也能作不可数名词概括这类行为。不要把它用于普通争吵或轻微攻击。countable uncountableThe attack was described as an outrage against innocent civilians.这次袭击被称为针对无辜平民的暴行。The report documents several outrages committed during the war.这份报告记录了战争期间发生的几起暴行。
-
common 令人发指的行为📖 指冒犯性、违背道德或不得体到令人震怒的行为;它强调行为越过了社会可接受的界限。💡 常用模式是“an outrage”或“an outrageous act”,也可说“regard/describe something as an outrage”。这个意义侧重行为本身,而不是旁观者产生的情绪;后者通常用同一词的情绪义。countable uncountableMany people considered the decision an outrage.许多人认为这个决定令人发指。
-
core 义愤;愤怒📖 指人们因暴行、不公或严重冒犯而产生的强烈、带有道德谴责的愤怒。💡 常用模式是“public outrage over/at + 事件”或“a wave of outrage”,也常说“spark/provoke outrage”。它比普通的 anger 更强调震惊、愤慨和对不公的反应;不要把它简单当作所有生气情绪的同义词。countable uncountableThe ruling sparked public outrage across the country.这项裁决在全国引发了公愤。She expressed outrage at the unfair treatment of the workers.她对工人受到的不公平对待表示愤慨。
-
rare 破坏性暴乱📖 指失控的破坏性暴动或肆意破坏,是“越过界限的暴行”在群体骚乱中的旧式用法。💡 通常只在历史文本或正式叙述中出现,常指一场具体的骚乱或破坏行动。现代日常英语中一般不用它来表示普通的混乱或吵闹。countable obsolete uncountable

verb
-
common 残暴对待;虐待📖 表示以暴力、侮辱或其他严重恶劣的方式伤害某人,也就是把对方当作越过界限的暴行对象。💡 常用模式是“outrage + 人”或“be outraged by + 对待方式”。这是正式且带强烈谴责色彩的及物用法,现代英语中不如表示“引起义愤”的用法常见。不要用介词把直接宾语隔开。transitiveThe soldiers outraged the villagers during the occupation.占领期间,士兵们残暴地对待村民。
-
core 使义愤填膺📖 表示某个行为、决定或言论严重冒犯道德感,从而使人强烈愤怒和震惊。💡 常用模式是“outrage + 人”或“be outraged by/at + 事情”。它的宾语是产生愤怒的人或群体,而引发愤怒的事情通常放在主语位置;不要说成不带宾语的普通“生气”。transitiveThe leaked images outraged the public.泄露的图片激起了公众的义愤。She was outraged by the manager's refusal to help.经理拒绝帮忙让她感到非常愤慨。
-
rare 性侵;强奸📖 指以性暴力侵犯他人;这是“残暴地伤害、侮辱某人”这一核心概念的历史或特殊用法。💡 这是古旧且现今少用的用法,涉及性暴力时现代英语通常使用更明确的法律或临床术语。学习者不应把它当作普通的“冒犯”来使用,也不宜在非必要场合套用。archaic transitive
-
rare 超过;压过📖 指在程度或力量上过度超过某物,是“越过界限”这一核心概念的过时用法。💡 这是过时用法,主要可能出现在古典或历史文本中。现代英语中不要用它表示一般的“超过”或“胜过”,应改用更常见的表达。obsolete transitive

🌳 词源
词源本义与“越过界限”有关,后来受到 out- 和 rage 的重新分析影响,但现代词义并不是这两个成分的字面相加。
From Middle English outrage, from Old French outrage, oultrage (“excess”), from Vulgar Latin *ultrāticum ("a going beyond"), derived from Latin ultrā (“beyond”). Later reanalysed as out- + rage, whence the contemporary pronunciation, though neither of these are etymologically related.
The verb is from Middle English outragen, from Old French oultragier.
