lumber
★
🇺🇸 /lˈʌmbɚ/
🇬🇧 /ˈlʌm.bə/
noun
-
core 木材📖 指已经锯成木板或经过类似加工、准备出售或使用的木材,尤其用于建筑。这个意义保留了“笨重的一堆材料”这一核心形象。💡 常用结构是“lumber for + 用途”或“buy/sell/use lumber”;在北美英语中尤其常见。它通常是不可数名词,所以说“some lumber”,而不是通常说“a lumber”。若强调一块具体木板,应换用更具体的名词。Canada US uncountable usuallyWe bought some lumber to build a deck.我们买了一些木材来建露台。The workers stacked the lumber beside the house.工人们把木材堆在房子旁边。
-
common 旧物;杂物📖 指堆放着、占地方的旧家具或其他物品,通常带有杂乱、碍事的感觉。💡 常见结构是“a room full of lumber”或“clear out the lumber”;这个意义通常不可数。它带有旧-fashioned或书面色彩,日常口语中更常用表示“杂物”的普通词。archaic uncountable usuallyThe attic was filled with old lumber.阁楼里堆满了旧家具和杂物。
-
common 无用的累赘材料📖 比喻指没有实际用处、却占据空间或妨碍思考的材料、信息或知识。💡 常用结构是“mental/intellectual lumber”或“clear away the lumber”;它通常带有批评意味。不要把这个意义误解为普通的木材,它强调的是“无用、笨重、累赘”。figuratively uncountable usuallyThe report contains a lot of useless lumber.这份报告里有很多无用的累赘内容。
-
rare 典当铺;当物📖 旧时可指典当铺或存放典当物品的房间,也可指被典当的物品。💡 这是过时的历史用法,现代英语中不要用它表示普通的典当铺或典当物。阅读旧文学或历史材料时,需根据上下文判断它指地点还是物品。obsolete uncountable usually
-
rare 棒球棒📖 在俚语中指棒球棒,突出了木制物品又大又笨重的形象。💡 这是棒球俚语,通常只在特定运动语境中出现。日常表达棒球棒时,使用普通的标准词更稳妥。slang uncountable usually
-
rare 勃起的阴茎📖 这是粗俗俚语中的成人义项,指勃起的阴茎。💡 该义项粗俗且具有成人性质,不适合正式或一般交际。除非明确讨论俚语或性语言,否则不要使用。slang uncountable usually vulgar

core 笨重缓慢地移动📖 指人或物像拖着一大堆笨重东西一样,行动缓慢而不灵活。💡 常用结构是“lumber along/up/down + 地点”或“lumber toward + 目标”;它通常是不及物动词。这个词不仅表示慢,还暗示动作沉重、笨拙,不宜用于轻快或灵活的移动。intransitiveThe tired horse lumbered up the hill.那匹疲惫的马笨重地爬上山坡。He lumbered across the room carrying a box.他抱着箱子,笨重地穿过房间。
-
core 使负担过重📖 指给某人加上太多物品、责任或任务,使其像被笨重东西压住一样难以应付。💡 常用结构是“lumber someone with + 名词”,其中被加负担的人作宾语,负担放在 with 后。这个结构通常带有抱怨意味;不要按汉语习惯直接说“lumber something to someone”。transitiveThey lumbered me with three extra assignments.他们又给我压了三项额外任务。Don't lumber her with all the arrangements.别把所有安排都压给她。
-
common 杂乱堆在一起📖 指把许多东西杂乱地堆在一起,形成占地方的一堆杂物。💡 常用结构是“lumber things together”或“be lumbered together”;宾语通常是物品。这个用法强调杂乱堆积,不只是普通地把东西放在一起。Old boxes were lumbered together in the corner.旧箱子杂乱地堆在角落里。
-
common 用杂物塞满📖 指用笨重或杂乱的东西把房间等地方塞满,使其拥挤不便。💡 常用结构是“lumber up + 地点”或“lumber something up with + 物品”;它通常表示空间被不必要的东西占满。不要把它和表示木工建造的普通动词混用。They lumbered up the spare room with broken furniture.他们用坏家具把客房塞得满满当当。
-
rare 典当物品📖 旧时俚语中指把物品拿去典当,也就是把物品暂时交给典当商换取钱。💡 这是过时且带俚语色彩的及物用法,现代英语中几乎不用。阅读旧文本时可按“lumber something”理解为拿某物去典当。obsolete slang transitive

🌳 词源
词源不确定,可能与表示“移动笨拙”的动词义有关;早期名词义指笨重而无用的旧家具等物品。
Exact origin unknown. The earliest recorded reference for the noun was to heavy, useless objects such as old, discarded furniture. Perhaps from the verb lumber in reference to meaning "awkward to move"; Online Etymological Dictionary thinks this may derive from the same root as lame. Possibly influenced by Lumbar, an obsolete variant of Lombard, the Italian immigrant class known for being pawnbrokers and money-lenders in early England. Compare English lumpish.
