💡 记忆钩子

📝 学习建议
  • 先掌握名词的核心线索“偶然带来的机会或好运”,再区分“好运本身”和“成功结果”的用法。
  • 不要把 luck 简单理解成“幸运的人”;它通常指运气、机会或好运这一抽象概念。
📖 中文释义
name
  • rare 姓氏
    📖 Luck 也可以是姓氏,这个用法与“运气”的普通词义无关,而是从名字 Luke 转来的。
    💡 用于人名结构“名字 + Luck”,例如“Michael Luck”。这里 Luck 指人的姓,不表示某人很幸运,也不应翻译成“运气”。
noun
  • core 偶然机会
    📖 luck 指事情并非完全由计划或能力决定,而是碰巧发生在某人身上的机会或结果。它强调事情的偶然性,例如抽奖能否中奖主要取决于 luck。
    💡 常见句型是“be a matter of luck”或“by luck + 动词”。它通常作不可数名词,不说“a luck”来表示一次运气;需要表达“一次幸运的机会”时,可用“a piece of luck”或“a stroke of luck”。
    uncountable usually
Winning the last ticket was pure luck.
    抢到最后一张票纯粹是运气。
By luck, we found an open table near the window.
    我们靠运气找到了窗边的一张空桌。
  • common 成功所需的好运
    📖 这里的 luck 特别强调为了达到目标,除了努力和能力之外还需要一点偶然的好运;它不是说成功完全靠运气。
💡 常见句型是“it takes luck to do something”或“need a bit of luck to do something”。这个用法常与努力、技能或准备并列,用来表示成功还需要外部条件;不要把它误解为“运气这个东西本身需要努力”。
    especially uncountable usually
It takes hard work and a little luck to build a successful business.
    建立一家成功的企业需要努力,也需要一点好运。
  • core 带来好运的力量
    📖 luck 也可指人们相信能带来好运或避免厄运的神秘力量,因此有人会做某些动作或携带某些物品来求 luck。这里表达的是一种迷信观念。
    💡 常见句型是“do something for luck”或“bring someone luck”。这个用法常出现在谈比赛、考试、赌博等场合,语气可以认真,也可以带有调侃意味;不要把 for luck 理解成“因为已经幸运”。
    uncountable usually
She kept the old coin in her pocket for luck.
    她把那枚旧硬币放在口袋里,想求个好运。
He always wears the same shirt for luck before a big game.
    每逢重要比赛前,他总穿同一件衬衫来求好运。
  • common 成功;顺利
    📖 当 luck 表示“成功”时,重点不在偶然事件本身,而在某件事有没有顺利实现,尤其常用于寻找、尝试或等待之后终于成功或一直失败的情况。
    💡 常见句型是“have luck with something”或“have no luck doing something”。否定形式“no luck”很常见,表示没有找到、没有成功或没有进展;不要把“Good luck!”误解为对已经发生的成功作描述,它通常是给人的祝愿。
    uncountable usually
I had no luck finding my keys this morning.

From Middle English luk, lukke, from Middle Dutch luc, geluc, gelucke (“good luck, fortune”) or Middle Low German lücke, gelücke (“lot, fortune, fate, luck”), of obscure origin; perhaps ultimately related to German Lücke (“gap, opening”) in the sense of "space or opportunity", hence "chance". Cognate with West Frisian gelok (“luck”), Saterland Frisian Gluk (“luck”), Dutch luk, geluk (“luck, happiness”), Dutch Low Saxon luk (“luck”), German Low German and German Glück (“luck, good fortune, happiness”), Danish and Norwegian Bokmål lykke (“luck, happiness”), Norwegian Nynorsk lukke (“luck, happiness”), Swedish lycka (“luck, happiness”), Icelandic lukka (“happiness”). According to the OED, it may be related to lock. A loanword into English in the 15th century (probably as a gambling term), Middle Dutch luc, gelucke has parallels with Middle High German lücke, gelücke ("luck, skill, chance, profession, livelihood"; whence Modern German Glück). The word occurs only from the 12th century, apparently first in Rhine Frankish. Perhaps from a Frankish *galukki, derived from Proto-Germanic *lukjǭ (“opening”). The word enters standard Middle High German during the 13th century, and spreads to English and Scandinavian in the Late Middle Ages. Its origin seems to have been regional or dialectal, and there were competing German words such as gevelle or schick, or the Latinate fortūne from Latin fortūna. Its etymology is unknown, although there are numerous proposals as to its derivations from a number of roots. Use as a verb in American English is late (1940s), but there was a Middle English verb lukken (“to chance, to happen by good fortune”) in the 15th century.
