finance

★★★★
🇺🇸 /fʌnˈæns/ 🇬🇧 /fɪˈnæns/
noun
  • core 资金管理
    📖 指管理钱、投资和其他资产的活动;个人、公司和政府都可以有自己的finance。
    💡 常用“公共finance”“公司finance”或“负责finance”这样的结构。这里通常把finance看作一个领域或职能,不要在泛指时随意加复数。它比单纯的money更强调计划、管理和运作。
    countable uncountable
She works in finance for a large technology company.
    她在一家大型科技公司的金融部门工作。
Good finance is essential to the success of any business.
    良好的财务管理对任何企业的成功都至关重要。
  • common 金融学
    📖 指系统研究如何管理资金和资产的学科,也就是把资金管家所做的事情整理成一门知识。
    💡 常用“学习finance”“研究finance”或“金融学课程”这类搭配。它指学科时通常是不可数名词,不要把它误当成某一笔具体资金。需要强调专业领域时,可和经济学、会计学等学科并列使用。
    countable uncountable
He studied finance at university and now works as an analyst.
    他在大学学习金融学,现在是一名分析师。
  • common 资金;财务状况
    📖 指某个公司、政府或组织实际拥有、可以使用或需要安排的钱;复数finances尤其常指一个单位的整体财务状况。
    💡 谈具体资金时可用“the finances of a company”,谈财务状况时常用复数finances。不要只按“钱”来翻译,因为它也包括收入、支出、债务和可用资源的整体情况。修饰政府、机构或个人时,语境通常会说明资金归属。
    countable plural-normally uncountable
The charity is reviewing its finances before starting the project.
    countable uncountable
We bought the car through finance and paid for it over three years.
    我们通过分期贷款买了这辆车,在三年内付清了车款。
finances plural
verb
  • common 经营资金;处理财务
    📖 指从事资金运作或处理财务事务,也就是做资金管家的工作。
    💡 作不及物动词时常用于较正式的语境,表示经营或安排财务,不能像普通及物动词一样直接把所有财务对象放在后面。日常英语中,表示具体支付或筹款时往往会改用更明确的动词。不要把它误解为单纯的“花钱”。
    intransitive
The organization must finance carefully if it wants to survive.
    这个组织想要维持下去,就必须谨慎管理资金。
  • rare 支付赎金
    📖 这是过时用法,指支付赎金;可以看作早期“用钱解决债务或赎回问题”这一主线的历史残留。
    💡 只在历史文献或仿古语境中出现,现代日常英语中不要用它表达普通付款。现代读者通常会把它理解为管理资金或提供融资。描述赎金时应优先使用现代的明确表达。
    intransitive obsolete
  • core 为……提供资金
    📖 指为某人、项目、交易或活动筹集并提供资金;例如出钱供某人上学,或为一个项目提供经费。
    💡 常用“finance + 项目或活动”以及“finance + 某人 + 事情”的结构。被动式“be financed by”很常见,用来说明资金来源;它不一定表示说话者亲自付款,也可以表示安排或获得资金。不要把finance和fund完全混同:finance更突出资金安排,fund也常指具体设立或投入资金。
    transitive
A local foundation financed the renovation of the community center.
    一家当地基金会为社区中心的翻修提供了资金。
Her parents financed her education abroad.
    她的父母资助了她在国外的教育。
  • rare 勒索赎金
    📖 这是过时用法,指向他人勒索赎金;它是早期“通过钱款解决赎回问题”这条词源线的另一种历史发展。
    💡 现代英语中基本不这样使用,学习时只需在历史文本中识别即可。不要把它当作现代“为某事提供资金”的普通及物用法。现代语境应使用明确表示勒索或索取赎金的表达。
    obsolete transitive
finances present,singular,third-person financing participle, present financed participle, past financed past

🌳 词源
finance源自表示“结束”的词根,后来引申为清偿债务、处理钱款,最终发展出今天的“金融、财务和融资”等含义。
From Middle English finaunce, from Anglo-Norman, Middle French finance, from finer (“to pay ransom”) (whence also English fine (“to pay a penalty”)), from fin (“end”), from Latin fīnis. Original English sense that appeared c. 1400 was “ending”. The sense of “ending or satisfying a debt” originated from French influence: in the sense of “ransom” appeared in the mid 15th century, in the sense of “taxation” appeared in the late 15th century. In the sense of “manage money” first recorded c. 1770.
