cliffhanger
🇺🇸 /klˈɪfhˌæŋɚ/
noun
-
💡 常用“end on a cliffhanger”表示“以悬念收尾”,也常用“a cliffhanger ending”修饰影视剧或小说结尾。 The final episode ended on a cliffhanger, with the detective opening the mysterious letter. I dislike books that end on a cliffhanger and make me wait a year for the sequel.
💡 常用“the election was a cliffhanger”或“the race remained a cliffhanger until the end”来说明结果直到最后才揭晓。 broadlyThe election was a cliffhanger until the last votes were counted.

From cliff + hanger, evoking the image of someone left hanging from a cliff, thereby having an uncertain fate. The term cliffhanger is considered to have originated with the serialized version of Thomas Hardy's A Pair of Blue Eyes, published in Tinsley's Magazine in the 1870s, in which the character Henry Knight is left hanging off of a cliff. It was inspired by a real life story from his wife Emma's childhood, when she had to rescue one of her school friends from a similar position.
